Who is Larry "NuFace" Compton?
Combining the grit of Detroit with a deep passion for hip-hop, Larry "NuFace" Compton has not only left his mark on Atlanta but has also enriched the entire hip-hop culture through his unparalleled dedication and unique approach to journalism. I had the privilege of spending a few hours with NuFace, observing a typical day in his extraordinary life. What I witnessed was nothing short of remarkable—a man who, in a matter of hours, connected with more people than most of us could in weeks.
My introduction to NuFace came through a mutual friend, Chris Hunter, who was engineering a small project for me. When we discussed marketing strategies, Chris insisted that I needed to meet NuFace, describing him as "a walking, living, breathing Rolodex." At the time, I had never heard of him. But Chris’s glowing recommendation piqued my interest, and I started following NuFace’s journey on Instagram. That was nearly four years ago.
It wasn’t until a year ago that I finally met NuFace in person. In the meantime, I watched his momentum grow, his impact becoming undeniable. It was like noticing a car you admire—once you see it, you start seeing it everywhere. That was NuFace for me. Despite being engrossed in developing the new direction for The KYNGSYX Ensemble, opening a photography studio in Atlanta, and building a relationship with the woman who is now my wife, I kept up with his journey. Following him takes effort—his pace is relentless—but what I witnessed over those years was the creation of an entirely new lane for himself and his brand under the moniker #NuFaceWasThere.
NuFace’s journey is powered by a God-given passion for hip-hop, community, and networking. He has become one of Atlanta’s most influential figures by being authentically himself and consistently showing respect to those who have shaped his life. A self-proclaimed collector of "hip-hop artifacts," his treasure trove spans decades—from records and magazines to autographed memorabilia. His collection is so extensive that it often eclipses the collections of the artists themselves. When he shares these artifacts with the artists, the nostalgia and joy on their faces speak volumes about the cultural significance of his work.
NuFace’s ability to connect is unparalleled. Regardless of who is in front of him, the respect he shows is mutual. Even during first encounters, people recognize his passion and work ethic, embracing him and his mission. Beyond his vast collection, NuFace has mastered the art of presence. LeBron James, you know, the GOAT of basketball (lol, that made a few of you cringe, but it's true), once said his greatest attribute is simply being available. He places so much value in being durable and available night in and night out in efforts to show up for his teammates. This is NuFace. He’s at every event and every show, documenting and preserving hip-hop history. In Atlanta, his presence has become a stamp of approval. When #NuFaceWasThere, you know an event mattered. And I truly believe the coordinators of these events know this as well.
His relentless consistency has solidified his legendary status, but NuFace remains grounded. He’s humble, grateful, and radiates positivity. It’s clear he has navigated through challenges and has chosen to focus on uplifting and celebrating others.
One memorable encounter I had with NuFace was at a secret Dave Chappelle pop-up show held at the Atlanta Comedy Theater. Believe it or not, TI opened the night, and had an incredible set. I'm Serious (pun intended). He was followed by a phenomenal set from Dave himself. The energy of that night was unforgettable, and it was NuFace who made it happen for me. That night solidified my understanding of his influence and impact.
Larry "NuFace" Compton is more than a journalist or a collector; he is a bridge between generations, a curator of culture, and a living testament to the power of passion and consistency. From NWA to Wham, Atlanta and the entire hip-hop culture are richer because #NuFaceWasThere.
Introducing the "Trap In Peace" Hoodie
As I spent more time with NuFace, I realized how perfectly he embodies the spirit of The KYNGSYX Ensemble’s mission. For nearly three years, I had been developing a design called the "Trap In Peace" hoodie—a unisex hooded sweatshirt adorned with chenille patches. I struggled with how I would introduce this piece to my audience who has their own idea of what "luxury" should be. But then it dawned on me, that is not what the brand is about. We don't contour to fit. This is luxury our way. And far greater than that, this is purposeful luxury. And the purpose behind the Trap In Peace hoody was to encourage people to respect each other in their pursuit of securing the bag. The concept behind this design was to encourage respect and decorum in the pursuit of success, whether in boardrooms or on the streets. It’s about promoting peace and understanding while chasing dreams.
Seeing how NuFace moved seamlessly from room to room, connecting people and fostering positive vibes, a light bulb went off. NuFace is the epitome of what it means to "Trap In Peace." His relentlessness, loyalty, humility, and respect make him a stand-up individual who needs no sides—he is his own force.
When NuFace invited me to his home, I was amazed. His home is a museum of hip-hop history, filled with autographed cassette tapes, artwork, and more. But what stood out most was his excitement when he talked about his daughters and their future. That moment showed me the depth of his character and why he is so deeply respected.
NuFace is the pulse of authenticity in Atlanta’s culture. He’s a savant, a connoisseur, a father, and a legend. It is my honor to feature him and introduce his story to our audience. I hope his ambition inspires you to go above and beyond your own goals.
